Hey there!

Most people know Amelia Earhart as the daring, barrier-breaking aviator who became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.

But history usually glosses over how meticulously she engineered her own iconic, "tomboyish" public image to fund her passion.

Back in the 1920s, when she first started flying, the aviation world was entirely dominated by men who didn't take her seriously. To fit in, she bought a classic leather flying jacket—but she thought it looked far too new and inexperienced. To fix this, she spent days intentionally scuffing it up, dragging it across the floor, and even sleeping in it for nights on end just to give it a rugged, "battle-tested" look. She also deliberately cut her hair short and wore masculine clothing to keep the focus entirely on her skills rather than her gender.

If she hadn't possessed that exact level of meticulous, media-savvy branding, she might never have secured the corporate sponsorships required to fund the legendary, record-shattering flights that permanently wrote her name into the stars.

It just goes to show that the giants of history are often far more complex—and human—than our textbooks let on.
